Voyage of American Promise
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (October, 1990)
Author: Dodge Morgan
Average review score:

Adventuure for the desk bound
Dodge speaks well of the sea and the solitude it can create as he circumnavigates the oceans. His log maintains an even keel inspite of the turmoil at sea. For the uninitiated, American Promise is a strange setting for soul searching and learning to love. Well done Dodge.

Adolescence
Published in Paperback by McGraw Hill College Div (September, 1998)
Authors: Laurence Steinberg and Nancy Dodge Reyome
Average review score:

An Excellent Review of Relevant Research and Theories
This is an excellent text for adolescent development. It is an easy read for undergraduate students and it provides summaries of a variety of current research projects. I have used Steinberg's text for two years to teach a course in adolescent development and I have yet to find a better undergraduate text on adolescence.

Excellent resource
Steinberg is an incredible writer and a top researcher. This textbook is the best of its type.

Sets the standard
This textbook by Steinberg sets the standard for texts in the psychology of adolescence. Steinberg has distinguished himself not only as one of the major researchers in the area of adolescent development, but as a writer who can translate scientific jargon into language that is accessible. This text is well-written, well-organized, and contains most of the important research on adolescence.

Hans Brinker
Published in Paperback by Viking Penguin Inc (March, 2000)
Author: Mary M. Dodge
Average review score:

Do not buy this book...
...if you have any affection for the original book or any respect for your child's intelligence. It is an offensively dumbed-down version of the classic. The soul and substance of this book have been surgically removed, the language simplified to second grade level, and the real-life messages and values so memorably presented by the original simply DELETED. The illustrations are of stiffly drawn, misproportioned coloring book figures. It is well worth waiting a couple years until your child is ready to read and enjoy and learn from the original version.

This is a SIMPLIFIED VERSION and not the original.
Be aware that this is a SIMPLIFIED VERSION and not the original text. The original (which ...(this website) also sells) is much richer & more interesting; Ms. Dodge wrote it for the grade-school kids of the 1860s; my sibs & I enjoyed it as grade school kids in the 1950s; in my opinion, it is accessable to the grade-school kids of today. I'd give the original 5 stars.

ADVICE NEEDED!
I discovered a copy of Hans Brinker while cleaning up after my grandfather's death. He was an avid reader! My problem is, that I, too, have no idea when, where, or what value this book may be? My copy is rather aqua with a little dutch boy on the front carry two buckets over his shoulders. In the background is a dutch girl (ice skating) and a windmill. Inside the paperback cover is printed, "Giant Junior Classics: HANS BRINKER" Mary Mapes Dodge, Books Inc. New York Many thanks for your help! pmuri@yahoo.com

Copper Crucible: How the Arizona Miners' Strike of 1983 Recast Labor-Management Relations in America
Published in Paperback by Ilr Pr (January, 1999)
Author: Jonathan D. Rosenblum
Average review score:

An work of fiction.
In Copper Crucible, Jonathan D. Rosenblum sets out to grind his ax and bash the evil "big business & Corporate giants". Too bad he didn't tell the rest of the story,... As he fell all over himself demonizing Phelps Dodge and raising Union organizers to sainthood, he conveniently omits the fact that a fully loaded beer truck was the drawing card the union used for its strike meetings. Alcohol just set the stage for the violence to come. And beleive me there was plenty & encouraged by the union. "Lets get the miners drunk & they will vote how we say" after all,... its all about power & money -on the union side as well. Copper Crucible may be based on true events, but it certainly does not paint a full true picture.

The destruction of workers' lives despite union membership
This book focuses on the destruction of individuals' lives when they cross paths with a powerful corporation, Phelps Dodge, when that company has the leverage to do so. This book reveals clearly how thin was the veneer of the labor-management accord after WWII. Phelps Dodge saw an opportunity to bust their unions and aided by labor law, labor law officials, and law enforcement departments did so. This book is strongest in its depiction of personalities but is weakest in putting this entire episode in a larger perspective. Rosemblum casts doubt on the unions understandings and strategies in this strike of 1983. But what is missing is any broad attempt to frame this labor conflict in context of the political understandings and power of the American working class in general. Why are the anti-labor biases of labor law officials, judges, and law enforcement officials tolerated in this country? Do most working poeple support these biases? Do they not know that they exist or consider them to be irrelevant? Do they support union-busting? If not, are they powerless to elect pro-worker Congressmen and change labor laws? Union actions and community understandings take place in these unanswered contexts. The book is highly readable but one is left primarily with sympathy for the mostly Chicano workers who had their lives uprooted and not with a broader understanding of labor relations other than the obvious capability of a company with an extreme anti-union animus to carry out its will.

Killing a Union -- Phelps Dodge v. the Miners
This history of a bitter Arizona mining strike in 1983-86 is a top-notch case study of how unions were mugged by American corporations in the 1980s. To judge by the endnotes, Rosenblum interviewed every player in the strike -- from Phelps Dodge executives and union leaders to ex-Governor Babbitt and undercover cops -- and the result is a vivid narative that weaves together labor history and political and legal analysis. The sections on pro-management bias at the NLRB and the use of undercover police to spy on strikers are gems of investigative reporting. Rosenblum is pro-union but he presents management's case at length and doesn't hold back from sharp criticism of the United Steelworkers leadership. If you're interested in labor history or labor/management relations in the US, read this book.

How to Hot Rod Small Block Mopar Engines: Covers All Chrysler, Dodge & Plymouth LA Series Engines-1964 to Present-273-318-340-360 C.I.D.

Good for 1st timers DIY's excellent for standard rebuilds
The book is well written, very thorough, easy to understand for the beginner. One flaw though, is that it only covers standard rebuilds, and it does not go into the performance aspect at all which is where it loses out in the market, if you already have a sound foundation in rebuilding engines and already know the basics, you would be better served buying something like Mopar speed secrets or something along those lines.

All in all it is still a very good book.

by Paulzig@hotmail.com

PERFORMANCE ORIENTED. Read this quote from introduction:
This book seems good for PERFORMANCE rebuilds. But if you're just learning about rebuilding engines, follow the books advice, and start elsewhere. Here's a quote from the book's introduction: "[This book] was written with the performance enthusiast in mind, and contains large amounts of information generated by Chrysler's internal research and development engineers. This book was also written with the assumption that the reader is already familiar with general overhaul, disassembly and assembly practices, especially those peculiar to the Chrysler A engine. Complete standards and techniques for these engines in stock form can be found in HPBooks' HOW TO REBUILD YOUR SMALL-BLOCK MOPAR and in the Chrysler factory service manual for your particular engine. For factory manuals write: Chrysler Service Publications, 20026 Progress Drive, Strongville, Ohio, 44136. This book begins where those two books end--and that is on how to build a high-performance Chrysler small-block--very high-performance."

Excellent reference for building a performance Mopar
I'm not quite sure what other reviewers read, but this is not a book for standard rebuilds. This covers performance work only, and would not be a guide for the first-timer. It contains info on building up circle-track, drag, and street/strip cars, with general advice and specific part number and machining spec's. The book is written with a heavy factory-slant, as many of the parts and suggestions concern Mopar-sold parts. There's nothing wrong with that, as a lot of fast Chryslers run Mopar-brand equipment. The thank-you list in the front reads like a who's- who of Chrysler racing history, and some of them work at Chrysler to this day, so this isn't some guy out in left field telling you to slap a 800 CFM carb on your 1978 Lean Burn 318 and go Corvette hunting- he and his advisors know small block Chryslers better than almost anybody else I can think of. I've known or worked with several of them, and they've turned out an impressive pile of fast engines over the years. This book is well worth the $15 investment, considering the money you'll dump into a good motor

Economics: Principles & Policy: Test Book B to Accompany Baumol-Blinder
Published in Paperback by Dryden Press (February, 1994)
Authors: William J. Baumol and John Dodge
Average review score:

It's mainstream economics myths and legends
I didn't buy the book. I looked at some parts to verify a critique by others I read. I found this quote:

"So while saving may pave the road to riches for an individual, if the nation as a whole decides to save more, the result may be poverty for all!"

This thinking is flawed. After all, true savings means that we have put aside something we created (instead of consuming it) that someone can now use to sustain themselves while they create new products and jobs for those who were laid off from unprofitable businesses. Without these savings, we would not be able to survive to produce more. And if we don't, ourselves, produce more than we consume, then where will all the new businesses get their resources to run their new business (before it starts to produce anything).

As usual, these writers of mainstream economics don't seem able to follow through with a chain of events. It's as though when someone saves a dollar's worth of some product, it is always burried and lost to human kind. These authors would have us continue to consume everything around us without any regard for new production. Somehow this would result in less proverty.

Unless you are forced to buy this book for a course in Economics, you would be better off looking elsewhere. Better yet, find a better course in economics, unless you are only interested in working for some organization that feeds itself by spreading false economic theory.

Quintessential good introduction
I used this book as my first introduction to economics, and even many years after having read it I continue to use it as a source of reference to the most simple concepts of economics. It has the very best simple explanations of economic principles that I have ever seen. It is filled with interesting stories that bring these principles to the real world, showing a novice the potential power of these ideas. This is Economics 101 at its best.

full of the economic wisdom
I am teaching economics and have read the textbooks written by Stiglitz, Mankiw, Samuelson etc.,but I think this is the best.It not only explains the elements of economics in plain words, but also convey lots of incisive insights which we should keep in mind when we tackle economic problems. I found Baumol and Blinder very instructive as well as interesting.

Haynes Dodge & Plymouth Neon, 1995-1997
Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (November, 1997)
Author: Ed Scott
Average review score:

look closely at the reviews!!
Look at the reviews of chiltons. notice there are two bad reviews one day before there are two good reviews for Haynes. I would ignore these four reviews when making your decision.

Good basic information, but could be better
Good book to get started working on your Neon, but does contain some minor errors. Since the company tore apart a 4 dr. Single Overhead Cam car, there is not much for the Double Overhead Cam engine other than drawings. Could be better, but contains good basic information.

Great Book!!!
Much more informative than Chilton. This book company obviously took the car apart and did research. Very clear illustrations and explanations of how things work and function.

Haynes Dodge Plymouth Chrysler Mini-Vans 1984-1995 : Caravan, Voyager, and Town and Country Automotive Repair Manual
Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (December, 1994)
Authors: Haynes Publishing and Curt Choate
Average review score:

HAYNES IS BETTER
If you are ready to work on your own vehicle, then buy Haynes manuals. Haynes gets specific about how to remove, repair, and repalce with helpful hints and steps. CAUTION: repairing your own vehicle requires some basic knowlege of how your car works. However, common sence can go a long way. This book will not inform a 6th grader how to fix engine problems. This book covers in depth each engine size from 4 cyl to 6 cyl, all different engine sizes from those years. It also states a disclaimer that it does not cover specialty equipment such as All Wheel Drive.

Based on a complete teardown and rebuild...
Haynes manuals are far superior to anything else on the market for all around basic do-it-youself information. They are not perfect. Information on the majority of systems is more than adequate for basic home repairs, but while basic wiring diagrams are included, they do lack detail in the area of electronics. In contrast, Chilton manuals often include no chassis electrical or electronic information whatsoever and factory service manuals are very, very dry and can be hard for non-pro's to read.

It should be said, however, that these books are not for the neophyte car owner who has never done any repair work before. If you're an absolute beginner, buy the book AND find someone with good skills to shepherd you until you get the basics. This will save a lot of heartache in the long run.

Well illustrated, covers all maintenace tasks, most repair
The manual starts with an introduction to the models covered (All FWD models listed in the title, no AWD), tools required, safety advice and a brief trouble shooting guide. Then covers full strip down of engine, transmission, fuel, exhaust and electrical systems. Too brief chapter on body. The comprehensive diagrams and pictures are the strongest point of the Haynes manuals, and make them better than the far more expensive official workshop manuals as far as the average home mechanic is concerned. I have a V6 3.0 liter version, and can vouch for the manual for this model, the torque wrench settings, clearances etc. are accurate. No experience using it for the other engines. The manual does assume some experience for the major tasks like engine rebuilds, but assumes little or none in describing routine maintenance.
